"THE BUSCHMEN"
THE NAME:
Our most frequently asked question is probably the best place to start: How did we come up with the name and why?
While grilling out one afternoon with friends, everyone started calling out names for the band. As the day progressed, and the cold beverages continued to taste better and better, a glance at a Budweiser can (which happens to be the band members favorite brewer), there it was in the corporate name "Anheiser-Busch." "The Buschmen" was mentioned, and the more thought that was given to the multiple meanings of the name, and the added bonus of excellent marketing potential, the name choice was settled.
THE REASON:
As far as the actual formation of "The Buschmen", all credit must be given to all of the friends of Joel Little and Mike Stangel. Joel and Mike each had bands of their own at the time, but on Sundays, it was off to the local watering hole with flat tops in hand, playing for hours, due to the request of friends. As you can guess, these friends were always asking, "why the hell don't the two of you have your own band?"
In March of 2003, Joel and Mike, along with the original drummer Bruce Kimberlin started rehearsing "just for the fun of it." After 3 weeks the search for a lead guitarist began. First up for the audition was Lonnie McQuiston. After less than 60 minutes, there was no need for further auditions. The blistering leads, vocals,& philosophy blended together instantly.
With bookings only a month away, the thought of adding a keyboard player was kicked around, and a call was made to Derris "Doc" Pariseau: a perfect addition again, due to his love of southern rock and blues. The puzzle was complete and "The Buschmen" the band was born!
THE PHILOSOPHY:
With full band rehearsals underway, along came ideas, concepts & requests from all band members, and a philosophy was conceived:
#1..WE PLAY FOR THE LOVE OF MAKING MUSIC...NOT THE MONEY.
#2..THERE WOULD BE NO "BAND LEADER," RATHER ALL MEMBERS WOULD
#3..NO "SUPERSTAR ATTITUDES" WERE NEEDED. THE MEMBERS WOULD FOCUS ON WHY THEY STARTED PLAYING MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE.
EVOLUTION:
The Boardwalk Cafe and Betty Lou's Lounge were the 1st two venues. Thoughts of playing 2 times a month immediately changed. Beginning with Memorial weekend thru New Years Eve of 2003, the band played every weekend with only 5 weekends off. 2004 rolled in, and with it, more clubs and gigs. With all the members having full-time jobs, and little or no time off on weekends, playing took its toll on everyone. Due to a new job and time constraints, drummer Bruce Kimberlin, decided to work on marketing and management. Drummer Geno VanZant stepped into fill Bruce's shoes, and the gigs continued without "missing a beat!"
Luck was on our side. Geno was a perfect fit. A few months later, in April, during a show at Hermitage Crossings, a tenor sax player, Michael Baird was listening and asked the band if he could sit in on a set with his saxophone. After the standing ovation at the end of the set, we immediately requested his services as a full-time "Buschmen." His reply of "hell yea!" added to what has evolved into "The Buschmen."
